A half-city block of breathtaking views. That’s Southview Park. Nestled above Sausalito’s Old Town Southview Park offers something for everyone. It boasts a basketball court a tennis court and a playground. The park’s location on a steep hillside provides spectacular views of the Bay and San Francisco.
Southview Park’s history is surprisingly rich. It wasn’t always a park. It once housed the Southview School. Imagine children playing where now adults relax. The park underwent a major refurbishment from 2020 to 2022. This renovation included new retaining walls resurfaced courts and updated playground equipment. The project also involved a habitat-centered landscape plan. This involved planting evergreen shrubs grasses and succulents. The goal was to attract local birds bees and butterflies. Friends of Southview Park raised over $75000 to help fund this beautiful transformation.
The park’s microclimate is unique. On hot days the lack of trees can make it very warm. More often however the park is enveloped in fog. Bring both a heavy coat and sunscreen. That’s advice from locals who live nearby. They have witnessed firsthand the park’s shifting weather patterns.
Local residents cherish Southview Park. They share stories of childhood memories. They speak of picnics and tennis games. Some remember the Southview School. Others celebrate the park’s recent improvements. It’s a place for families friends and neighbors to connect. It’s a community gathering place. One neighbor Dave Brezner and Juli Betwee have enjoyed the park for 27 years. Another Alice Merrill attended the Southview School. Julie Scripps met her best friend there.
