Was there ever a church that began in a different building entirely? The Southside Church of God in Savannah certainly did. This church, a cornerstone of faith and community, traces its roots back to humble beginnings. The story of the Southside Church of God begins not here, but at the Mayo Chapel on Avon Street Extension. In 1964, thirteen faithful individuals gathered there, led by Reverend Walter Collier and Della. Imagine, a mere thirteen souls igniting a flame that would burn brightly for decades to come. They officially organized the Southside Church of God on September 27th of that year. Maynard Wood served as the first church clerk, diligently recording the nascent congregation’s progress. A few years later, in 1966, the growing congregation achieved a significant milestone. They purchased a church building on Park Lane, marking a step towards establishing a more permanent presence. The Southside Church of God continued to thrive under the leadership of Reverend Fred Bonham and Margaret from 1970 to 1975. During this period, in 1971, the church acquired a parsonage, providing a home for its spiritual leaders. This period marked an important step in the church’s growth. Fast forward to 1985. The Southside Church of God purchased the property where we stand today. The current facilities were erected, finally giving the church a true home of its own. The years that followed saw continued improvements and expansions. A new sign was erected in 1993, proudly proclaiming the church’s presence. In 1995, a new steeple reached towards the heavens, symbolizing the church’s aspirations. The church purchased a van, extending its reach into the community. They even managed to retire the church’s indebtedness, a testament to the dedication and generosity of its members. This allowed the church to continue its focus on reaching and helping others. Over the years, the Southside Church of God has undergone significant renovations. These include new audio and video systems, upgraded windows in the church, and a new roof for the parsonage. The parsonage’s bathrooms and kitchen were also remodeled, providing modern amenities for the church’s leadership. Even more recently, in 2009, the church building itself received a new roof. In 2010, persistent drainage issues on the parking lot side were addressed. The side porch and sidewalk were rebuilt. The Southside Church of God’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people, the faith, and the commitment to serving the community. From humble beginnings in a small chapel to the thriving institution we see today, it stands as a testament to the power of faith and community.
