“One chance of an excellent education” is Southgate School’s motto. But what does that really mean? Southgate School is more than just classrooms and textbooks. It is a vibrant community with a rich history. This history stretches back to 1907.
Southgate School began its journey in Broomfield House, Palmers Green. It was then known as Southgate County School. Later, the school moved to Fox Lane also in Palmers Green. A significant change occurred in 1960. The Fox Lane site closed, and a new one in Sussex Way, Cockfosters, was purchased.
In 1967, Southgate School merged with Oakwood Secondary Modern School. The Chase Road site of Oakwood became the lower school. This was for students in their first three years. By 1991, the Lower School also moved to the Sussex Way site. The Chase Road site was then sold. Some of the land was used for housing and some for a private school.
Southgate School achieved Specialist Science Status in 2004. This was a result of raising £50,000. The funding allowed for improved science facilities. These improvements included new equipment, renewed laboratories, and a hanging laboratory. It was built in the middle of the East Wing building.
Southgate School celebrated its centenary in the summer of 2007. Anthony Wilde, after 15 years as headteacher, left in 2015. Martin Lavelle replaced him. In April 2016, Southgate School became an academy. It is now sponsored by the Middlesex Learning Trust.
Southgate School is a coeducational secondary school. It also has a sixth form. It is located in the Oakwood area. The school sits east of the Cat Hill roundabout. The A111 and A110 roads are nearby.
