Did a synagogue ever stand in someone’s living room? Amazingly, the Southgate Progressive Synagogue’s story began in the heart of World War II, in 1943. Picture this: a small group of Jewish families, longing for connection during those dark days, decided to establish their own beacon of hope right here in Southgate. They started with intimate gatherings, their living rooms transformed into sacred spaces for prayer and community. Now, look around you at the beautiful Southgate Progressive Synagogue! It has grown from those humble beginnings to become a thriving testament to their resilience. The congregation’s journey led them from shared living rooms to a community hall on Green Road and finally, in 1954, to this very spot. The original house on these grounds, now known as Richard Michael House, bears witness to their remarkable journey. It’s fascinating to think that as the Southgate Progressive Synagogue thrived, it needed even more space! The congregation expanded, adding the purpose-built Schindler Hall for High Holyday services and events accommodating a remarkable 450 people. Imagine the echoes of their celebrations and traditions, carried on the air through the years! Today, the Southgate Progressive Synagogue stands as a vibrant symbol of their enduring spirit. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, reminding us of the power of faith and community to overcome even the darkest of times.
