Nestled in the heart of Southgate, stands the Southgate Methodist Church. It has a rich history. The church we see today wasn’t always here. The story of Southgate Methodist Church begins in a small cottage on Myrtle Terrace in 1885. This cottage held the first Methodist gatherings in Southgate. The congregation quickly outgrew this space. They moved to a former baker’s shop on Chase Side. A Sunday School even started on the first floor. They continued to grow, utilizing both the shop and a marquee on a nearby meadow. They eventually hired an iron building behind the Congregational Church on Chase Side. In 1891, they finally established a permanent home on Chase Side. As London expanded, so did Southgate. In 1929, Southgate Methodist Church opened its doors at its current location on Queen Elizabeth’s Drive. The church’s journey reflects the changing times. In 2014, Oakwood Methodist Church joined Southgate, marking a new chapter. The church then returned to its original name: Southgate Methodist Church. The building itself has also undergone transformations. A new Sunday School block was added in 1937. The Augustine/Luther building followed in 1953. A major refurbishment in 1993 saw the introduction of comfortable chairs and a welcoming area. The church continues to adapt and serve its community.
