A symphony of industry hums. That’s the Southern Industrial and Logistics Clusters. Right here before you lies a landscape transformed. Once a mangrove swamp Jurong now boasts a sprawling industrial estate. This wasn’t always so.

In 1961 a vision took root. Dutch economist Albert Winsemius spearheaded Singapore’s industrialisation. Jurong a 69 sq km expanse was chosen. Hills were levelled. Swamps were filled. The foundation for Singapore’s first industrial estate was laid.

Early industries included timber sawmilling oil-rig fabrication. Shipbuilding and repair also flourished. By 1976 over 650 factories were operational. More than 20000 flats were occupied. Jurong became a self-sufficient town.

Jurong Port began operations in 1965. It handles raw materials and manufactured products. Pulau Damar Laut’s expansion further boosted its capacity. Today it boasts 32 berths. It has over 174000 sq m of warehouse facilities. It can accommodate ships weighing up to 150000 deadweight tonnes. This port has won numerous awards. The Jurong Town Corporation JTC played a vital role. Established in 1968 it planned developed and managed industrial sites. It adapted to economic shifts. It focused on high-technology and capital-intensive industries. It has since been renamed JTC Corporation. Its headquarters moved to JTC Summit. The original Jurong Town Hall a national monument stands as a reminder of its legacy. It is a key element of the Southern Industrial and Logistics Clusters’ history.
