Can you believe this vibrant district, Southeast, was once just a quiet stretch of Singapore’s coastline? Established on November 24, 2001, the Southeast Community Development Council breathes life into this corner of Singapore. Southeast pulsates with a unique energy, a blend of historical charm and modern dynamism. It’s home to over 551,000 residents, making it a bustling hub of activity. Southeast encompasses iconic neighborhoods like Geylang Serai, Joo Chiat, Bedok, Marine Parade, and Serangoon Central. Each area contributes to the district’s rich tapestry of cultures and experiences. Think about the bustling markets of Geylang Serai, the colorful shophouses of Joo Chiat, or the relaxed beach vibes of East Coast Park, all within Southeast. As of March 2020, Southeast includes constituencies within both Single Member Constituencies and Group Representation Constituencies. These GRCs represent areas like East Coast (including Bedok, Changi-Simei, Fengshan, Kampong Chai Chee, and Siglap) and Marine Parade (covering Braddell Heights, Geylang Serai, Joo Chiat, Kembangan – Chai Chee, and Marine Parade itself). Southeast’s leadership is guided by its mayor, a role currently held by Fahmi Aliman of the People’s Action Party. He stepped into the position in 2020, following in the footsteps of previous mayors like Matthias Yao and Maliki Osman. Interestingly, in 2020, a $2 million fund was established to support residents in Southeast and raise mental health awareness.
