The Southeast Steam Plant, originally the Twin City Rapid Transit Company Steam Power Plant, was built in 1903. It was designed by the Chicago firm of Sargent and Lundy. Its purpose was to electrify the Twin City Rapid Transit street railway system, the lifeblood of Minneapolis for 50 years. Imagine the hustle and bustle of those early streetcars, drawing their power from this very spot. The plant’s architecture, a blend of sturdy sandstone bedrock foundations, limestone, and red brick walls, reflects a Second Renaissance Revival style. The Southeast Steam Plant continued to hum with activity even after Minneapolis transitioned to buses in the 1950s. Ownership passed from the Twin City Rapid Transit Company to Xcel Energy, then known as Northern States Power Company. In 1976, the University of Minnesota acquired the plant for a mere dollar, a symbolic gesture recognizing the plant’s continuing value. Today, the Southeast Steam Plant is a combined heat and power plant, providing essential services to the university. It heats a staggering 94 buildings, cools 19, and even pipes steam to the University of Minnesota Medical Center, the Minnesota State Board of Health, and the Cedar Riverside People’s Center. The plant’s steam travels through an extensive 18-mile tunnel network, enough to warm 55,000 homes. The Southeast Steam Plant has undergone significant renovations over the years, including a complete gutting and rebuilding of the interior in 2000. This modernization allowed the university to shutter its old coal-burning power plant. Exterior renovations completed in 2005 garnered a local historic preservation award. Now, the Southeast Steam Plant stands as one of the cleanest burning power plants in the country, utilizing natural gas, fuel oil, coal, and even wood waste. It’s also been approved to test oat hull biofuel, a renewable resource that could significantly reduce student energy costs.
