The Southall Chamber of Commerce Office and Conference Room stands before us. It is more than bricks and mortar. It represents the heart of Southall’s business community.
Let’s step back in time. The Southall Chamber of Commerce began in 1902. It started as a local Tradesmen’s Association. Mr. W. G. Beckett was the first President. Mr. Rowe served as Secretary. Beckett owned a drapery business on High Street. This marked the start of an organization that would shape Southall.
For years, the Chamber met in various locations. Then, in 1970, a breakthrough occurred. The Borough of Southall joined the Borough of Ealing in 1965. The Manor House became available. It had previously housed several Council Departments.
Mr. Harold Hallett, the Chamber’s new Secretary in 1968, had a vision. He wanted a permanent headquarters. He negotiated with the Ealing Borough for a lease on the Manor House. Finally, on June 27th, 1970, his efforts paid off. The Mayor and Mayoress officially handed over a lease at a nominal rent.
The Chamber worked hard to make the building usable. They added their own furnishings. Thus, the Southall Chamber of Commerce found its home. It is the oldest organization housed in the oldest house in town.
The Southall Chamber of Commerce has always championed local tradesmen. It reported issues they wanted improved to the authorities. For example, in 1909, members complained about postal services. They wanted more deliveries.
Today, the Southall Chamber of Commerce Office and Conference Room continues its mission. It supports businesses across various industries. The Conference Room hosts meetings and social events. It is a place where ideas are shared and partnerships are formed.
