Picture the South Twin Cities Church of Christ. It stands tall a beacon of faith in Rosemount Minnesota. Its history isn’t solely its own. It’s woven into the rich tapestry of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Bethlehem a church with deep roots in Minneapolis.
For over a century Bethlehem served the Scandinavian community. Imagine Swedish immigrants arriving on trains. Members of First Swedish Baptist Church welcoming them. This was the church’s beginning in 1871. A testament to faith and community. The church’s first building however met a tragic end in 1886. A fire destroyed it. Undeterred they rebuilt. They found a new home a thirteen-year-old building.
Years passed. World War II ended. Immigration patterns shifted. The Swedish Baptist denomination changed. In 1945 First Swedish Baptist became Bethlehem Baptist Church. It adapted and thrived. Then in 1980 a pivotal moment. Dr John Piper a young professor became pastor. Under his guidance Bethlehem grew significantly. It expanded its reach. It opened new campuses. A North Campus and a South Campus.
By 2022 Bethlehem’s three campuses had a decision to make. They voted to become independent churches. The South Campus in Lakeville a vibrant community became its own entity. It was planted as South Cities Church. It may not be the South Twin Cities Church of Christ but its story is intertwined with the rich history of Bethlehem Baptist Church. A history of faith resilience and community. A history that continues to unfold. A history you can feel standing here today.
