Emerging as a city in its own right, South Tangerang pulses with a unique energy. South Tangerang officially separated from Tangerang Regency in 2008. This relatively young city, nestled within Banten province, has quickly become a dynamic hub in the Greater Jakarta area. South Tangerang is a fascinating blend of meticulously planned communities and remnants of a rich history. South Tangerang is home to several planned towns, including Alam Sutera, BSD City, and Bintaro Jaya. These modern developments boast business centers, shopping malls, and even international schools. This rapid development contributes to South Tangerang having the highest average land price among Jakarta’s satellite cities. The presence of these modern urban landscapes contrasts sharply with the city’s history. The Situ Gintung reservoir, built in 1933 by Dutch colonial authorities, stands as a reminder of this past. South Tangerang is also a linguistic melting pot. While Betawi is spoken in most areas, pockets of Tangerang Sundanese persist, particularly along the Cisadane River in the western part of the city.
