The South Shore 130th Street Bridge is no ordinary bridge. It started its life as a floating swing bridge back in 1908. Imagine the sight of it slowly pivoting open to allow ships to pass through the Calumet River! Then, as time marched on and technology advanced, it underwent a transformation. In 1952, the South Shore 130th Street Bridge was converted into a fixed bridge. It was raised 6 feet to accommodate larger vessels, marking the end of its swinging days. But that’s not the end of its story. Just over a decade later, in 1965, a new chapter began. The old truss structure was replaced with a brand new fixed bridge, a feat of engineering ingenuity. It was a sight to behold – the new 300-foot-long span, with its impressive 25-foot vertical clearance, was floated into place on two massive barges.
