Originally established in July 1969, South Seattle College began its journey by holding classes in various locations. These included West Seattle High School, the Duwamish site, and the Holgate site on 3rd Ave. The college found its permanent home on 16th Avenue SW in West Seattle, opening its doors in the fall of 1970. South Seattle College’s first president, Robert C. Smith, served from July 1969 to 1977. He laid the foundation for the college’s commitment to community service.
South Seattle College also boasts a unique history. It was initially part of the Seattle School District’s Adult and Vocational Division and Edison Technical School. In 2014, the institution transitioned from South Seattle Community College to South Seattle College.
