Was it bravery or simply duty that led these men to war? Here at the South Ockendon War Memerial, the weight of sacrifice hangs heavy in the air. This obelisk, reaching skyward like a silent sentinel, stands as a solemn testament to the men from South Ockendon who marched off to fight, never to return. The South Ockendon War Memerial isn’t just a monument. It’s a story etched in stone. Erected after the Great War, its red marble tablets bear the names of 45 local men who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. Later, the names of 10 more were added after the horrors of World War II. Imagine the families, the friends, the lovers, all gathered here. Seeking solace in shared grief. Remembering their fathers, sons, brothers, and friends. They’re gone, but not forgotten, their names forever etched in this poignant reminder of the human cost of war.
