Slipping back to 1890, imagine South San Francisco as just a glimmer in the eye of Peter E. Iler. He envisioned a bustling hub, right here by the water’s edge at Point San Bruno. This area, now home to South Lake, was once slated to be the heart of a massive meatpacking operation, backed by giants like Armour and Swift. South Lake wasn’t even a lake yet! It was part of the 3,500 acres Iler optioned, including the Lux Ranch, to build this meatpacking empire. The chilling winds, perfect for carrying the less-than-pleasant smells of the slaughterhouses out over the bay, sealed the deal for Swift. While others balked under pressure from San Francisco butchers, Swift forged ahead, establishing the stockyard and Western Meat Company in 1892. Iler’s vision extended beyond the slaughterhouses. He planned a separate residential town upwind, a place where the workers would live, far from the industrial clamor. South Lake, although not part of his initial plans, would eventually emerge as a quiet, natural counterpoint to the industrial growth Iler spurred. South San Francisco blossomed, drawing other industries and becoming known as “The Industrial City.” South Lake became a tranquil oasis amidst this boom, a reminder of the area’s transformation from ranchland to industrial powerhouse. Though the grand meatpacking dream didn’t fully materialize, the ripple effects of Iler’s vision shaped the area, ultimately leading to the creation of South Lake as we know it today.
