Peeking out from the western edge of Edinburgh, South Gyle awaits. It is a place where modern life intertwines with whispers of the past. South Gyle might seem like a recent creation with buildings dating from the 1980s onwards. But beneath the surface lies a history waiting to be discovered.

South Gyle’s name possibly comes from the Gaelic word “goill” meaning “bog”. This makes sense considering the former Gogar Loch in the area. Imagine a marshy landscape. This is before the buildings and businesses arrived.

South Gyle is neatly divided. There is a residential area around Gogarloch. There is also a commercial zone featuring the Gyle Shopping Centre. Edinburgh Park and Gyle Park are also here. The Royal Bank of Scotland and sportscotland have their bases in this district.

Getting around South Gyle is easy. Edinburgh Airport is nearby. The city bypass connects to major routes. South Gyle Station links to Edinburgh and Fife. Edinburgh Park Station offers services to various destinations. Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams serve the area too. The Edinburgh Gateway Interchange connects trains and trams.

Once, a bronze age sword was found in the former Gogarloch. Perhaps it was an offering to the loch. Roman coins have also been discovered nearby. Some even claim a Roman road once ran through here. Farm buildings dotted the landscape in the recent past. Now, only a few remain. Look for them on South Gyle Road. These cottages with red pan tiles hint at the area’s agricultural past.

South Gyle Road has a story to tell. It runs through Wester Broom Estate. South Gyle Gardens and Gylemuir School are nearby. The road crosses South Gyle Station. The station opened in 1985. Further down, you will find farm workers cottages. Across the road lies Gogarloch. Its streets bear names like Syke Haugh and Muir.

Keep an eye out for a ghost hedge. Solitary hawthorn trees line up. They mark the path of the old South Gyle Road. This road was blocked off by the roundabout in the 1990s. These hawthorns may have survived the developments. It was considered unlucky to cut down hawthorn trees in old Scottish folklore. Perhaps that’s why they’re still here.

Today, South Gyle is a thriving area. The Scottish Prison Service has its headquarters here. Gylemuir Primary School serves the local children. The Drum Brae/Gyle ward represents the area politically. South Gyle is more than just modern buildings. It is a place where history and modernity meet. As you explore, remember the marsh the farms and the ghost hedge. They whisper tales of South Gyle’s past.
