A legacy of titans. That’s the story of South Garland High School. Right here at 600 Colonel Drive, stands a testament to community spirit and evolving traditions. South Garland High School opened its doors in 1964, as the second public high school in Garland, Texas. It quickly became a cornerstone of the community. South Garland High School’s motto, “A Tradition in Excellence,” speaks volumes about its commitment to academics and extracurriculars. Originally, the school’s mascot was the Colonel, a title of respect common in the South. The school colors were, and still are, red and Columbia blue. But times change, and so do traditions. In 2020, after much community input, the Garland ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to retire the Colonel mascot. A new mascot, the Titan, was chosen. The Titan, embodying strength, resilience, and achievement, represents the students and staff of South Garland High School. This change reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and growth. South Garland High School hasn’t shied away from confronting its past. In the early 1990s, controversy arose over the Confederate flag imagery in the school’s shield. After protests and community discussions, the school board voted to remove the flag. A student-designed crossed sword emblem replaced it, symbolizing a move towards a more inclusive future. This wasn’t the end of the school’s journey of growth. In 2015, the school board further distanced itself from Confederate symbolism, reaffirming its dedication to creating a welcoming environment for all students. Today, South Garland High School offers a comprehensive academic experience. Students can choose from a variety of Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses. These courses provide opportunities to earn college credit. In partnership with Eastfield College, South Garland High School offers an Early College High School program, allowing students to graduate with an associate degree and up to 60 college credits. South Garland High School’s dedication to its students extends beyond academics. A wide range of extracurricular activities is available. From band and choir to theatre and esports, students can explore their passions and develop their talents. The school also offers signature programs in cosmetology, welding, auto body collision repair, and auto technology, equipping students with valuable vocational skills. South Garland High School continues to evolve and grow, embracing its past while forging a new path towards a brighter future for its students.
