A peculiar blend of vintage charm and modern flair, that’s South Congress for you. Right here on South Congress Avenue, where the city’s pulse throbs with an eclectic rhythm. South Congress, or SoCo as the locals affectionately call it, isn’t just a street. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of music, art, food, and a whole lot of Austin’s unique “weirdness”. South Congress stretches from the Colorado River, marked by the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, and runs south towards Ben White Boulevard. It’s nestled between the historic South Austin neighborhoods of Travis Heights and Bouldin Creek. South Congress Avenue’s story began humbly in the 1850s as a rural country road. Imagine it, a dusty path leading to the state capital and the main highway to San Antonio. It wasn’t until a concrete bridge was built in 1910 that South Austin truly connected with the rest of the city. The 1920s saw rapid growth as the streetcar extended down South Congress, bringing with it bungalows and a burgeoning commercial scene. By 1931, South Congress was paved all the way to Ben White Boulevard. This era birthed some of SoCo’s most iconic landmarks. The Austin Motel, a retro gem, opened its doors in 1938, and the Hotel San José followed shortly after. Even the legendary Night Hawk restaurant traces its roots back to a humble hamburger stand on South Congress in 1932. The Twin Oaks Shopping Center, one of Austin’s first strip malls, arrived in 1954, further shaping the avenue’s identity. South Congress wasn’t always the trendy hub it is today. The rise of I-35 in the 1950s diverted traffic, and the area fell into disrepair. Yet, amidst the decline, a unique spirit began to brew. The 1970s saw South Congress become a haven for artists and musicians. The Armadillo World Headquarters, a legendary music venue, opened its doors in 1970. By the late 1980s, a renaissance began. Attracted by affordable rents, eclectic retailers started setting up shop, breathing new life into the area. The Magnolia Cafe South, opened in a renovated building in 1988, became a symbol of this revival. The 1990s witnessed a surge of renovations and redevelopment projects. South Congress Avenue transformed into a nationally recognized shopping and cultural district. Today, South Congress is a must-see destination. From Allens Boots, established in 1977, to the quirky shops and art venues, SoCo offers a unique shopping experience. Foodies can indulge in everything from tacos to pizza at the numerous restaurants and food trucks. And on the first Thursday of every month, the avenue comes alive with extended shopping hours, live music, and a vibrant celebration of the SoCo spirit.
