The South Branch Chicago River, a waterway that has shaped the city’s history, lies right here before you. It is a fascinating tale of engineering, pollution, and rejuvenation. This river branch, once a meandering marshland, was transformed into an engineered channel to support Chicago’s growing industrial activity. The main stem of the river is named after the ramps (Allium tricoccum) that grew abundantly near the river, because the French people called them shikaakwa or chicagou. The word Chicago is a translation of the French rendering of the Native American name, and so the river was named after the plant.

Chicago’s phenomenal growth into a major urban center is largely due to its strategic location on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. For a long time, the South Branch was the city’s primary sewer, taking waste from the Union Stock Yards and meat packing industry. This gave it a name you may know – Bubbly Creek, because of its severe pollution.

The river, once known by many local residents as “the stinking river”, was eventually cleaned in an effort at beautification by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. It underwent an extensive cleaning process during the 1990s, which was the start of its renaissance. Today, it is a popular destination for recreational activities including fishing, boating, and kayaking.

The South Branch Chicago River is a symbol of transformation and resilience. It plays an important role in the city’s history and future, demonstrating the city’s commitment to progress and environmental protection. This river, a witness to the city’s evolution, is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.
