The dark murky waters. That’s what Sortedams Sø means. Imagine its history unfolding before you.

Sortedams Sø. A vital part of Copenhagen’s past. It served as a water reservoir until 1959. Even earlier it played a role in the city’s defenses. This wasn’t just a pretty lake. It was a lifeline.

For centuries water flowed from Utterslev Mose and Emdrup Sø. These waters fed the Sortedams Sø. Imagine the intricate system of pipes and canals. They brought water to the city. It was a complex network. Life depended on it.

Christian IV kept a close eye on the Sø’s condition. He even wrote letters. He was particularly concerned about leaks. He wanted to maintain the water level in Sortedams Sø. He knew the city depended on it.

The water quality wasn’t always great. People called it “lukewarm eel soup”. If a thick algae entered the pumps the “vandkigger” had to be called. This “water watcher” would disassemble the pump. He would remove the algae before it spoiled the water.

In the 1920s the lake was improved. Vertical granite edges were added. Walking paths were created around the lake. The Sø was becoming a recreational area.

A dramatic incident occurred in 1944. A German seaplane crashed. Two crew members died along with a local passerby. This sad event added another layer to the lake’s history.

Today Sortedams Sø is a beautiful place. People walk jog and cycle around it. It is a much loved part of Copenhagen’s urban landscape. Its dark murky past is now a fascinating story. A story of water defense and recreation. A story of the Sortedams Sø.
