“Limestone buildings and appealing weather” – does that sound like the perfect holiday destination? You are standing in Sorrento. This coastal town is located on the Mornington Peninsula. It sits approximately 100 km south of Melbourne.

Sorrento is a place of significant historical importance. The Boonwurrung people knew this area as Bullanatoolong. They lived here for tens of thousands of years before Europeans arrived.

In 1802, Lieutenant John Murray landed here. He led the first British force into Port Phillip Bay. Murray formally took possession of the area for King George III. This ceremony occurred at Point King Foreshore Reserve.

A year later, the British established a convict settlement in Sorrento. Lieutenant Governor David Collins led this effort. This site became the first British settlement on mainland Australia outside of Sydney. However, the settlement was soon abandoned. The settlers moved to Hobart in Tasmania.

Sorrento’s early days saw important firsts. The first magistrates’ court was here. Also, the first public hospital was founded here. The first postal service began here. The first government printing office started here. The first Victorian wedding took place here. The first christening happened here. The first funeral services were conducted here in Sorrento.

The name “Sorrento” has Italian roots. It was given when the area opened for housing in 1869. It was named after the Italian seaside town.

George Coppin played a big role in Sorrento’s development. He invested heavily to make Sorrento a popular destination. In 1874, Coppin founded the Sorrento-Queenscliff Steam Navigation Company. This company made the town more accessible. He also built the Continental Hotel in 1875.

The Sorrento Post Office opened in 1871. The current building dates from 1904 to 1905. It is now used for retail and a cafe.

Sorrento Park was established in 1870. It contains a variety of trees. One notable tree is an Aleppo Pine. It grew from a seed of the Lone Pine of Gallipoli.

Today, Sorrento remains a popular destination. Ferries regularly travel to Portsea and Queenscliff. Sorrento offers a range of attractions. There are shops, restaurants, and cafes. There are also beaches and walking trails.
