Soroksár-Újtelep. A name that whispers of new beginnings. A neighborhood born amidst controversy and shaped by the needs of a growing city. Right here, in the 23rd district of Budapest, Soroksár-Újtelep’s story unfolds. Soroksár-Újtelep emerged in the 1920s. It began as a small settlement near the Pesterzsébet cemetery, known as Lóállás-délő. By 1928, around 100 houses dotted the landscape. A tug-of-war ensued between Pesterzsébet and Soroksár over this burgeoning area. Soroksár eventually won, officially incorporating Újtelep into its boundaries. This victory brought new residents. Many displaced families from Pesterzsébet’s Hangya-telep found refuge and a fresh start in Soroksár-Újtelep. This area houses Soroksár’s only high-rise apartment buildings, the Szentlőrinci úti housing estate. Originally envisioned as a much larger project in 1987, construction stalled after the completion of the first phase. The Szentlőrinci úti estate finally reached its current form between 1990 and 1991. Soroksár-Újtelep is also home to a striking landmark. The Church of Our Lady of Fatima, consecrated in 2002. Its blue tower reaches 41 meters into the sky, crowned by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. Soroksár-Újtelep. A testament to Budapest’s ever-evolving urban landscape. A place where new beginnings took root and where a community continues to flourish.
