“Ever wonder how a humble farm can transform into a luxurious castle hotel?” I ask you. That is the story of Sophiendal. Welcome to Sophiendal Slotshotel. It is more than just a beautiful building. It is a piece of Danish history.

Sophiendal’s story stretches back 1000 years. That makes it one of Denmark’s oldest sites. English monks journeyed here. They sought to strengthen Christianity. They followed the Gudenå River to Veng. Here, they founded a monastery.

Originally, Sophiendal was known as Veng Kloster. After the Reformation in 1536, the crown took over. Christian V established a national cavalry corps in 1670. Land around Skanderborg supported the cavalry regiments. Venggaard was then a forest ranger’s house. It was under Skanderborg Castle.

Frederik Ludvig von Woyda bought Venggaard in 1767. He renamed it Sophiendal. This honored his wife, Frederikka Anne Sophie. Woyda served as district governor in Skanderborg. He spent much of his time at Sophiendal.

Frederikka Anne Sophie Adeler inherited Sophiendal in 1778. She lived here until her death in 1805. Her heirs sold the peasant estate in 1805. They sold Sophiendal to Andreas Nicolai Bagger and Jørgen M. Gjesing in 1807.

Jørgen Rosenkrantz became the sole owner in 1821. He was married to Birgitte Charlotte Reedtz-Thott. She was an heir of Woyda. Gottlob Rosenkrantz improved Sophiendal. He planted a large area with forest. This boosted the estate’s economy. The manor became a Rosenkrantz family gathering spot. It replaced Rosenholm.

Jørgen Rosenkrantz inherited Sophiendal in 1886. The estate faced economic challenges. Jørgen focused on cattle breeding. He professionalized forestry operations. Holger Rosenkrantz owned Sophiendal until 1942.

The main building you see today was built between 1875 and 1884. Gottlob Rosenkrantz commissioned it. H.B. Storck designed it in the Neo-Renaissance style. It resembles Rosenholm. Gottlob Rosenkrantz was married to Elisabeth Louise Rosenkrantz from Rosenholm. The main building was renovated in 1994. It has been a castle hotel since 1990.

The entrance to Sophiendal is flanked by stable wings built in 1871. The farm is located north of the main building. The oldest building dates back to 1855. Other buildings were added in the 1860s and 1870s.

Today, Sophiendal is owned by Sophiendal ApS. Ann and Gorm Lokdal run a hotel here. Sophiendal Slotshotel offers beautiful rooms. It blends historical charm with modern comfort.

Sophiendal is part of Danske Slotshoteller. These hotels offer great experiences in beautiful settings.

Take a moment to appreciate the linden trees. They mark the entrance to the main building. Imagine the large garden that once lay south of the building. Veng Church is close by. It is Denmark’s oldest monastery church, built in 1058.

Sophiendal has a rich history. It is a beautiful place to stay. It connects you to Denmark’s past. It offers a unique and memorable experience.
