It was originally called the Huangpu River Bridge. Later, it was renamed the Cheting Bridge. The Songpu Bridge, as we know it today, earned its name in 1995. This naming convention followed a trend in Shanghai, using the Puxi area name followed by “Pu” for bridges crossing the Huangpu River, like Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge. The Songpu Bridge, completed in 1976, was a vital transportation link for the Jinshan Petrochemical Complex. This double-decker bridge carried both highway and railway traffic. The upper level served as part of the 320 National Highway and Cheting Highway. The lower level originally carried the Jinshan branch of the Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway.
