Six thousand years ago, the land before you, Songjiang, first emerged from the sea. Imagine the early settlers cultivating rice, hunting deer, and domesticating pigs. These were the Majiabang people, leaving their mark on Songjiang’s history. Songjiang then became home to the Songze and the Liangzhu, a sophisticated society. They left behind the Guangfulin relics, now a fascinating park and museum, showcasing Songjiang’s rich past. Songjiang’s story continued through the dynasties. It transitioned from Wu to Yue to Chu, finally becoming part of a unified China under Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Songjiang flourished under Sun Quan’s Wu Kingdom. The Grand Canal, connecting Songjiang to distant cities like Hangzhou and Beijing, cemented its importance. By the Tang Dynasty, Songjiang was thriving, becoming Huating County, Shanghai’s first county-level administration. Songjiang prospered thanks to a young girl named Huang Daopo. She brought back improved cotton strains and technology from Hainan, transforming the region’s sandy lands into fertile fields. This agricultural boom led to Songjiang being named a prefecture under the Yuan Dynasty. It’s considered the birthplace of China’s textile industry. The Yuan period also witnessed the construction of Shanghai’s first mosque in Songjiang, a testament to its growing diversity. In the Ming Dynasty, Songjiang’s strategic importance grew. Its defenses were strengthened against Wokou pirates. The Jesuits built the town’s first church, a sign of increasing global connections. Songjiang, then known as Sumkiam, became a hub for trade and cultural exchange. The Qing Dynasty brought both prosperity and tragedy. The city was devastated in 1645 after a rebellion against the mandated queue hairstyle. Yet, it remained a key city in the Shanghai region. It even served as a base for the Ever-Victorious Army during the Taiping Rebellion, further shaping its military history. Even with Shanghai’s rise, Songjiang remained the region’s administrative center. It housed the Songhu Special Administrative District under the Republic of China. The 20th century brought occupation during World War II. Yet, Songjiang persevered. It restored its temples and historic sites, transforming into a vibrant university town. In 1998, Songjiang became the district you see today. As you stand here, imagine the layers of history beneath your feet. Songjiang’s story echoes through time.
