Sonchamp

Deep in the valley where the Rémarde River begins its journey, lies Sonchamp. Sonchamp is nestled amidst a tapestry of fields and forests. It boasts the title of the second largest commune in the Yvelines region. Sonchamp sprawls across an impressive 46.49 square kilometers. A rich historical tapestry is woven into the fabric of Sonchamp, evident in the numerous prehistoric, Gallo-Roman, and medieval archaeological sites scattered across its landscape. In 1844, a treasure trove of over 1,200 ancient coins was unearthed, a testament to Sonchamp’s deep-rooted past. The village is a charming mosaic of a main town and numerous hamlets. These hamlets include Greffiers, la Hunière, la Chéraille, la Guêpière, Baudicourt, Chatonville, les Meurgers, les Monts, Boutareine, la Granville, Pinceloup, and Louareux. Overlooking the village is the Saint-Georges church, a historical landmark with its oldest sections dating back to the 11th century. The church was added to the inventory of historical monuments in 1984. A curious tale is etched in the stained glass of Saint-Georges. A 2CV car, crashed against a tree, is depicted at the bottom of a stained-glass window dedicated to Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. This unusual addition commemorates a car accident from which the village priest miraculously survived. Two chapels grace Sonchamp, Saint-Sébastien in Greffiers and Saint-Jean in Louareux. The Château de Pinceloup stands as a testament to Sonchamp’s architectural heritage. Constructed in the early 17th century and expanded in the 18th, this imposing brick and stone edifice became home to the Le Nôtre school. On the grounds of the Château de Pinceloup, two intriguing structures remain: the icehouses. These cone-shaped pits, dug into the sand and lined with straw, were used to store ice collected from the chateau’s pond during winter. Sonchamp is more than just history; it is a vibrant community.
