Rumors whispered on the wind. They spoke of Son Banya a place shrouded in mystery. A place on the outskirts of Palma. A place that once held a reputation as Mallorca’s drug supermarket.

Son Banya’s story began in 1969. A Palma town hall initiative aimed to help gypsy families. These families lived in terrible conditions in areas like El Molinar. The church assisted in this effort. They sought to find a better place for these families. This well-intentioned project however ultimately led to the creation of Son Banya. A shanty town that would later become infamous.

The town grew. It became a hub for drug trafficking. Powerful clans controlled the area. Their wealth and influence were periodically revealed by police operations. But not everyone in Son Banya was involved. Many were simply trying to survive in difficult circumstances.

Demolition was ordered years later. This was due to Son Banya’s notoriety. The relocation of families was discussed. Carlos Cortés ‘El Charly’ a prominent figure. He spoke of deception and broken agreements. He said that not a single house would be demolished. This was until the situation with housing and support was resolved.

Approximately 700 people still lived in Son Banya. About 200 were children. They lived in harsh conditions. Lack of proper sanitation and utilities was widespread. El Charly highlighted the racism involved. He pointed out that there were homes for foreign immigrants but not for Spanish gypsies.

Despite attempts at demolition and relocation. Parts of Son Banya remain. The challenges of poverty and societal prejudice are still evident. The legacy of Son Banya serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of urban poverty and social inequality. The story of Son Banya is a story of good intentions gone wrong. It’s also a story of resilience in the face of adversity. A place where the whispers of the past linger. A place where the fight for a better future continues.
