Somervell Presbyterian Church

In 1905, a seed of faith was planted right here at Somervell Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Elizabeth Somervell generously donated the land in memory of her husband. Somervell Presbyterian Church has blossomed and grown over the decades. The church became a cornerstone of the community. The original building served the growing congregation for many years. Packed services filled the church in the 1950s and 60s. Families who attended then are still connected to Somervell Presbyterian Church today. The church navigated changing times in the 70s and 80s. Sermons addressed contemporary issues like nuclear disarmament. New styles of music blended with traditional hymns. A new chapter began in 2000. Somervell Presbyterian Church opened its new church building and community center. The new space serves not only the church but also various organizations throughout the week. Inside the church foyer, you’ll find photos of the eleven ministers who have guided Somervell Presbyterian Church throughout its history. Next to them, you’ll see a picture of Mrs. Somervell, the woman who started it all. Somervell Presbyterian Church is located at 497 Remuera Road, at the corner of Greenlane East Road.
