King Chulalongkorn’s visit to Singapore in March 1871 was quite an event. He arrived on his yacht the Regent accompanied by two other ships and 66 followers. He even sent a cable to Queen Victoria from the Eastern Telegraph office a truly modern touch for the time.

The Somdech Phra Paramidr Maha Chulalonkorn Statue’s pedestal bears inscriptions. They are in Siamese Jawi Chinese and English. The English inscription reads “His Majesty Somdech Phra Paramindr Maha Chulalonkorn the Supreme King of Siam landed at Singapore the first foreign land visited by a Siamese monarch on the 16th March 1871”. Each inscription is a window into the past highlighting the cultural significance of this remarkable gift.
