Solvang Kirke

Five bells chime, not from some ancient tower, but from the surprisingly modern free-standing bell tower of Solvang Kirke. This church, nestled in Copenhagen’s Amager district, isn’t your typical Danish church. Solvang Kirke, consecrated in 1976, is a bold statement of modern architecture. Designed by Holger Jensen, the architect behind many of Copenhagen’s contemporary churches, it’s a complex of box-shaped buildings. The stark white walls and large windows create a bright, open space that feels more community center than cathedral. But don’t let the modern design fool you. Solvang Kirke is a vibrant hub of spiritual life. On Sundays, the smaller church hall expands into the adjacent parish hall, accommodating the large number of parishioners who come to worship. This adaptable space also hosts confirmations, meetings, and youth groups. Even the basement provides space for church youth activities. The church underwent significant renovations, externally between 1998 and 1999, and internally from 2003 to 2005. Imagine the transformation as the interior walls were plastered and painted a pristine white. A new lighting system, radiating from a cross above the altar, further enhanced the space, highlighting the seven-branched candelabra on the back wall.
