What secrets lie beneath the shimmering surface of Solbjerg Sø? This lake, stretching 7 kilometers between Stilling and Solbjerg, holds more than just water. It cradles history, myths, and perhaps even treasure. Solbjerg Sø is also known as Stilling Sø at one end and Fregerslev Sø in the middle. It’s part of the Aarhus River system. This isn’t just a geographical fact. It links Solbjerg Sø to the larger lifeblood of the region. Imagine this lake during the Torstensson War, 1643-1645. Skanderborg Castle, not far from here, was under siege by Swedish forces. Legend whispers that King Christian IV’s generals, always carrying a chest of silver to pay mercenaries, faced a dilemma. Swedish soldiers discovered their treasure. The Danish soldiers, under fire, reportedly hacked a hole in the frozen Solbjerg Sø. They plunged the silver chest into the icy depths, denying the Swedes their prize. The treasure may still rest in the deep, dark waters. Solbjerg Sø itself is a protected area. The surrounding valley, Pilbrodalen, adds to the preserved landscape. The lake’s clear waters, thanks to the zebra mussel, allow sunlight to penetrate deeper. This benefits some species but creates challenges for others like the Zander, which prefers murky waters. While the lake supports a diverse ecosystem, including pike, perch, roach, and even eel, the increased clarity has led to a shift in the fish populations. Solbjerg Sø is a place of contrasts. It’s a place of natural beauty and historical intrigue. It’s a place where nature thrives. It’s a place where legends are born. Look out across the water. Consider the stories it holds. Feel the presence of history and the whispers of secrets in the depths of Solbjerg Sø.
