Nestled on Paquetá Island, the Solar del Rei whispers tales of kings and princes. This isn’t just any building. It’s a time capsule, a remnant of the grand estates that once graced this island. Its name, Solar del Rei, meaning “King’s Manor,” speaks volumes. History tells us that Prince Regent João, later crowned King João VI of Portugal, frequently visited this very spot. He favored this particular building, then the finest on the island. It boasted the grandest accommodations, perfectly suited for royalty. Legend says the Prince, captivated by Paquetá’s beauty, even dubbed it “Island of Love.” He returned often, always choosing the Fonseca family’s mansion as his retreat. The Solar del Rei’s royal connections didn’t end there. In 1946, owner Edmundo Barreto Pinto officially christened it “Solar del Rei.” Years later, in 1961, Barreto Pinto transferred ownership to the State of Guanabara. The Solar del Rei then embarked on a new chapter. It housed the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, starting in 1965. Just twelve years later, it transitioned again, becoming the Paquetá Public Library. This building has seen royalty, served as a museum, and provided knowledge to the public. Today, the Solar del Rei stands as a testament to Paquetá’s rich history. It’s a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the promise of the future. The Solar del Rei continues to be a cultural landmark, a reminder of the island’s enduring charm and royal heritage.
