Rising from the earth like a fiery sun, the Sol Rojo Sculpture dominates the landscape. Here, at the Estadio Azteca, this massive artwork commands attention. The Sol Rojo, or “Red Sun,” isn’t just any sculpture. It holds a special place in Olympic history. Commissioned for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, it was one of three special pieces created for the event. This vibrant sculpture is the largest ever created by Alexander Calder. Towering at an impressive 25.8 meters, its steel frame captures and reflects the changing light. The warm, central “sun” seems to shift in tone throughout the day, responding to the atmospheric changes. The Sol Rojo originally accompanied nineteen other sculptures along the “Ruta de la Amistad” (Route of Friendship). This route was designed to line the highways around the Olympic Village. While many of those original works have been moved, the Sol Rojo remains at the Estadio Azteca. Time and the elements took their toll, but in 2009, the Sol Rojo underwent a significant restoration. Today, American Express helps maintain this iconic piece, ensuring its vibrant presence for years to come. As you stand before it, consider the blend of art, history, and athletic achievement captured in this single, monumental work. The Sol Rojo is more than just a sculpture. It’s a symbol of Mexico City’s Olympic legacy, a fiery testament to the power of art in public spaces.
