Ever wondered why Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is called CGK? Right here before you stands a testament to Indonesia’s ambition. This isn’t just an airport it’s a gateway. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened in 1985. It replaced older airports in Jakarta. Kemayoran Airport closed. Halim Perdanakusuma Airport still operates. It handles mostly charters and military flights. Soekarno-Hatta is located about 20 kilometers west of Jakarta in Tangerang Regency Banten.

The airport’s design is quite unique. French architect Paul Andreu modeled it on an Indonesian village. He envisioned red-tiled roof pavilions nestled among trees and rice paddies. Indonesian authorities however preferred a brown color instead. The resulting airport features gardens between terminals. This creates a rare connection to the outdoors. You can almost imagine yourself strolling through rice paddies.

Soekarno-Hatta has two main terminals. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights. Terminal 2 is for international flights. Both terminals opened in 1985 and 1992 respectively. Each has three sub-terminals. Each sub-terminal has check-in counters baggage carousels and gates. They boast a capacity to handle millions of passengers annually. Terminal 3 originally planned for low-cost carriers is now operational. Its design differs from Terminals 1 and 2. It accommodates larger aircraft like the Airbus A380. A planned Terminal 4 was cancelled due to lower-than-projected passenger numbers.

The airport’s architecture reflects Indonesian culture. The roof structures mimic traditional building methods. Materials like steel replace bamboo for safety reasons. Interior design displays Indonesian art. Wooden carvings represent different ethnic groups. You will even find kala-makara themes found in ancient Indonesian temples. Terminal 3 however has a different contemporary modern style.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has expanded significantly. A third runway opened to increase capacity. The airport handled nearly 50 million passengers in 2023. It’s one of Southeast Asia’s busiest airports. It continues to evolve striving to meet the needs of its millions of passengers. The airport’s growth demonstrates Indonesia’s connection to the global stage. It’s more than a transit point. It’s a reflection of Indonesia itself.
