Söbrigen’s history is long. It goes back to a small village on the Elbe. The village was likely founded in the 6th or 7th century. Söbrigen was first mentioned in documents in 1378. It was called “Cebegrin”. This name probably comes from a Sorbian founder. It means “village of Sebekury”. Over time, the name changed. It became Czebeberen and Sebiger. The spelling Söbrigen became official in 1759.
Söbrigen is one of Dresden’s smallest districts. It has a lot of nature. You can see vineyards and the Elbe. Altsöbrigen is the old village center. It has kept its charm. Until 1900, laundry was important here. A laundry ship sailed between Dresden and Söbrigen. People from Dresden sent their laundry to Söbrigen to be cleaned. Söbrigen was connected to Pillnitz early on. In the 18th century, Söbrigen became part of the Wettin court in Pillnitz.
From 1786 to 1795, Samuel David Roller lived in Söbrigen. Later, he became a pastor. He was friends with the Kügelgen family. His house was at Elbweg 6. French soldiers destroyed it during construction work. It was rebuilt soon after.
In the 19th century, Söbrigen became a popular destination. People enjoyed the landscape. They also liked the view of Saxon Switzerland and the Ore Mountains. A pier for the Elbe shipping company opened in 1896. From 1722 to 1992, there was a ferry to Zschieren.
Söbrigen became part of Dresden on July 1, 1950. Today, it is a small residential area. It is a great place to relax. You can enjoy nature by the Elbe. Söbrigen is close to Pillnitz Palace. This makes it a worthwhile destination.
