“What if these ruins could talk?” they might whisper tales of kings and queens, battles and betrayals. We are standing before the remnants of Søborg Castle. It once stood proudly on a peninsula jutting into Søborg Lake.

Søborg Castle’s story stretches back to the 1100s. Archbishop Eskild built the first fortification. It was a ringed wall and moat. The castle became one of Denmark’s most significant strongholds. It even served as a state prison.

Imagine Margaret I of Denmark, born within these walls. She later founded the Kalmar Union. Kings walked these grounds. Their decisions shaped the course of Danish history.

The nearby town of Søborg flourished because of the castle. Its large church, dating back to 1180, served the town and the castle. Søborg was a market town as early as 1270. Guilds thrived here. St. Gertrud’s Guild and St. Knud’s Guild had a presence in Søborg from 1341.

In 1582, a dark chapter unfolded. A witch burning took place in the town square. King Fredrick II visited Søborg in 1580. Even King Frederick VII participated in archaeological digs here in 1950.

Søborg Castle met a violent end during the Count’s Feud. Its stones became a quarry in 1577. Today, only ruins remain as silent witnesses.

For centuries, Søborg Lake defined the landscape. In the late 18th century, efforts began to drain it. A canal was dug to the Kattegat. But the lake remained marshy. In 1872, Count C. E. Frijs completed the draining. A pumping station at Søborggaard drains the area to this day. It processes 75,000 liters daily.

Now, there is a plan to restore Søborg Lake. By autumn 2023, the castle ruin may be reflected in the water again. New paths will welcome walkers, cyclists, and even horses.

As you stand here at Søborg, consider its layered history. It is a castle, a prison, a royal birthplace, and a ruin. The stones under your feet whisper stories of Denmark’s past. They invite you to imagine what once was and what might be again.
