Question: Did you know that Søborg Skole started as a solution to overcrowding? It stands here today. Søborg Skole has a rich history. It reflects the growth of the surrounding community.

Søborg Skole began in 1908. It was the second school in Gladsaxe-Herlev Kommune. The school aimed to be the main school for the Buddinge-Søborg area. In its first year, 270 students were divided into 7 classes. By the 1920s and 30s Søborg Skole became the largest school in the municipality.

Before Søborg Skole existed two private schools helped educate local children. Hermine Vilhelmine Andersen-Høyer opened Søborg Privatskole in 1904. The school served the growing number of children in Søborg. The local school commission supported Andersen-Høyer’s school. They gave her an annual grant to teach about 60 children. Frk Esther Lund also ran a private school. Her school prepared students for higher education in Lyngby.

Søborg Skole originally followed a pavilion system. This was a popular design in the early 1900s. A large red building was added in 1927. It faces Søborg Hovedgade. Figures of a boy and a girl were placed there some years later.

Even with the expansion in 1927 Søborg Skole needed more space. Marielyst Skole opened in 1938. Later Kennedy Skolen and Dag Hammerskjöld Skolen were built. These schools addressed the growing population after Høje Gladsaxe was completed.

In 2020 Søborg Skole was part of an innovative project. This project aimed to merge the concepts of a “Byskole” and an “Oase”. It featured a green schoolyard extending onto the roof. A wide staircase led to a multisal. The outdoor space was designed for movement and gatherings. Exterior stairs connected learning environments on different floors. Specialized areas were created for science and cooking. The green oasis allowed residents to participate in gardening. They could also enjoy events with views of Søborg.

The schoolyard was expanded into a larger recreational area. This area included rainwater collection. It also increased biodiversity. Variation community and learning were central to the design.

During World War II Søborg Skole faced challenges. In April 1945 German forces used the school to house refugees. Teachers and students had little notice to evacuate. For months Søborg Skole shared space with Marielyst Skole. After the war the school housed German refugees. They eventually moved to Nybrogård and a badminton hall.

Today Søborg Skole stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It has evolved to meet changing needs. It embraces innovative design and community engagement. Søborg Skole provides a dynamic learning environment for its students.
