Haven’t you ever wondered about the stories behind place names? Smørumnedre holds a secret within its very name.

Smørumnedre is a town that forms part of Copenhagen’s urban sprawl. It is located on the northwestern outskirts. The original village has grown. It merged with Måløv and Jonstrup. Together, they form an urban area. As of January 2024, the population was 21,627.

Let’s dive into the history of Smørumnedre. The name “Smørum” appeared first in 1085. Canute IV mentioned it in a gift letter. He gifted it to the Bishop of Lund. “Smør” means “Butter” in Danish. The suffix “-rum” means “place”. So, Smørum could mean “Butter Place”.

But why butter? Some think it relates to old fertility cults. They believe it involves offerings with ritual anointings. These ideas are less popular now. Others suggest “smør-” names meant places for butter production. Maybe they stored butter there. It could also describe something yellow like buttercups. Another theory suggests places with damp. Perhaps it was somewhere with a greasy and marshy character.

The ending “hjem” means “farm”, “village”, or “settlement”. Smørum might mean “The settlement where butter is made”. “Smør” could be a general compliment. So, the name could mean “The wealthy village”.

The addition of “nedre” is also interesting. “Nedre” means lower. Smørumnedre might have been smaller than Smørumovre. The name may indicate it is at a lower elevation.

Smørumnedre was once smaller than Smørumovre. But in the 1960s and 1970s, it grew. Many single-family homes were built. It used to be the main town of Ledøje-Smørum Municipality. Later, it merged with Ølstykke Municipality. Together, they formed Egedal Municipality.

Today, Oticon’s headquarters are located in Smørumnedre. Oticon is a major hearing aid manufacturer. The building opened in 2005.

The local football club is Ledøje-Smørum Fodbold. They play in Danmarksserien. Their home games take place at Smørum Park and Ledøje Stadium.

So, as we stand here, consider the layers of history beneath our feet. From ancient villages to modern industry, Smørumnedre has evolved. It has transformed over the centuries. Its name, a simple word for butter, hints at a rich and complex past.
