Imagine knights and nobles once sought refuge right where we’re standing at Smørholm Voldsted. This is no ordinary field. It’s a protected historical site that whispers tales of medieval Denmark.

Smørholm Voldsted lies a little south of Smørum. Today the land belongs to the Edelgave estate. This area shows the remains of a medieval fortified manor. It had ramparts a moat and a defensive tower.

Here at Smørholm Voldsted you can see visible earthworks. These include ramparts moats and banks. They once protected a large medieval farm. Excavations reveal that this stronghold was in use until the mid-1300s.

The visible layout spans 120 meters in length and 70 meters in width. To the north rises a four-meter-high castle mound. A separate small fortification once stood there. A dry moat surrounded the castle mound. A two-meter-high rampart stood to the north east and west. South of the castle mound was the large flat farmyard bank. This is where homes and farm buildings were located.

In the 1100s and 1200s large farms often sat within villages. They weren’t fortified with ramparts and moats. But from the late 1200s conditions in Denmark became unstable. Especially in the 1300s many large farms moved out of the villages.

Local landowners had good reasons to settle on low isles and hills. They were near lakes or marshes. The swampy terrain became a natural defense around the farms.

Smørholm Voldsted represents one of hundreds of small fortified farms. They were built around the country during this period. These fortified sites aren’t identical. They were adapted to local terrain. Smørholm Voldsted shares many traits with other Danish fortified sites. That includes its location and design.

Smørholm Voldsted tells a story of troubled times. It shows us how people adapted and defended themselves. The earthworks we see today offer a glimpse into Denmark’s medieval past. They show the constant need for protection and security. As you explore this site consider the lives of those who lived and defended Smørholm Voldsted.
