SMK Seri Balik Pulau first opened its doors on January 10 1965. Back then, it was temporarily housed at SK Genting. In October 1966 the school’s name officially changed to SMK Seri Balik Pulau. A few years later on April 17 1969, SMK Seri Balik Pulau was officially inaugurated. YAB Tun Hj Abdul Razak Hussein, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, presided over the ceremony.

SMK Seri Balik Pulau has a history of student activism. On October 11 1974 students staged a protest. More than 600 students demonstrated in front of the school. They were unhappy with the headmaster’s actions. Negotiations between student representatives and the State Education Department failed. They could not reach an agreement.
SMK Seri Balik Pulau also fosters a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. The school has six sports houses. They are named Seri Penara Seri Genting Seri Kongsi Seri Betong Seri Perlis and Seri Pinang. Each house represents a color. Seri Penara is red. Seri Genting is green. Seri Kongsi is yellow. Seri Betong is blue. Seri Perlis is purple. Seri Pinang is orange.
SMK Seri Balik Pulau has come a long way since 1965. From its humble beginnings in SK Genting to its current location, it has grown. It continues to shape the lives of students in Balik Pulau.
