In 2015, there was a plan to transform SMK Pondok Upeh. The goal was to make it an elite school. It would gather top students from the Balik Pulau area. Only those with excellent UPSR results would be admitted. The school also wanted students who excelled in sports. Two new dormitories were planned. Each dormitory would house 100 students. The plan aimed to make Balik Pulau an education hub.
Today, SMK Pondok Upeh has grown. It now has 745 students and 56 teachers. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. These include sports, arts and clubs. There is also a preschool. It ensures a smooth transition for young learners.
