A vibrant smile greets you a burst of color on a Lisbon wall. This is Smile Graffiti the work of Ivo Santos. Born in Lisbon in 1985 Santos’s artistic journey began with a childhood passion for drawing fueled by his mother and two cousins. His love for hip hop culture in the 1990s ignited his interest in graffiti.
Initially using hardware store spray paint Smile’s early attempts weren’t perfect. He dedicated years to perfecting his technique and materials. His talent blossomed winning the Odivelas Graffiti Contest in 2002. A year later he rose to national prominence winning the prestigious Oeiras Graffiti Contest. This triumph cemented his place in Portugal’s artistic elite.
He continued to excel placing second in 2005 and 2006 and then achieving international recognition with a Barcelona win in 2009. Smile’s professionalism led to commissions from major brands like Nissan McDonald’s and Red Bull. He became a regular fixture in Portuguese media reports.
A highlight of his career came in 2013. His mural in Loures depicting a young man with medical issues sparked a wave of media attention helping to solve the young man’s problems. The Bartolo mural remains a testament to the power of urban art to address social issues.
Smile’s art has taken him to numerous countries including the United Kingdom Germany France Spain Switzerland the Netherlands Malta and Brazil. He also established the First Art Atelier&Gallery a public space for national and international artists. Currently he is the president of ACUParte a non-profit association promoting urban culture in Portugal.
