Step back in time, to a period when a wave of European immigrants sought a new life in Australia. The year is 1918, and the seeds of the Slovak Baptist Church & GraceWest Bible Church are sown. It all began in a humble home, within the walls of Mr. Hardcastle’s residence in Hampshire Road. There, the first meeting of the Sunshine Baptist congregation took place. The small group, seeking solace and community, found comfort in the shared faith and fellowship.
This humble gathering soon blossomed into a vibrant congregation, evolving through numerous locations before finding its home at 16 Sydney Street in Albion, a small suburb of Melbourne. The building is a testament to the enduring spirit of the church, its history etched in its very walls. The former army hall, repurposed for their needs, was a symbol of their strength and resilience. In 1973, the Sunshine Baptist Church took on a new name, embracing the Slovak community that had grown as part of their fold. This marked a significant shift in identity, reflecting the evolving demographics of the area. The church thrived as a hub for the Slovak people in Melbourne.
Years later, another chapter unfolded. In 2014, the Slovak Baptist Church merged with the GraceWest Church. This union signified a fresh start, a coming together of two congregations with shared convictions and a vibrant passion for the Gospel. Now known as the Grace Generation Church, the building stands as a testament to the spirit of unity and the ever-evolving nature of faith.
