Sweeping across the Kattegat, the beam from Sletterhage Fyr has guided ships for over a century. Sletterhage Fyr stands proudly on the southern tip of the Djursland peninsula. It’s a beacon of maritime history and a testament to the ingenuity of its creators. The current Sletterhage Fyr, a concrete cylindrical tower attached to a keeper’s house, was constructed in 1894. It replaced an earlier structure built in 1872. The lighthouse was commissioned by the Port of Aarhus to ensure safe passage for ships navigating the treacherous waters leading to Denmark’s second-largest city. Imagine the clockwork mechanism, tirelessly ticking away inside the original lighthouse. Every four hours, the keeper would dutifully wind the mechanism. It controlled the shutters that created the lighthouse’s distinctive flashing pattern. Today, a 600-watt halogen bulb performs the same task, its rhythmic bursts of light a comforting presence for mariners. Thousands of ships, around 7,000 to 8,000 annually, still pass by Sletterhage Fyr on their journeys to and from Aarhus. The shipping lane runs remarkably close to the lighthouse, with depths plunging to 50 meters just off the coast. Sletterhage Fyr also played a strategic role during World War II. Nearby, the “German Tower,” a watchpoint constructed during the occupation, served as a vital observation post overlooking the Kattegat. The lighthouse keeper’s house now serves as a museum, a treasure trove of maritime history. Inside, you’ll find exhibits showcasing historical navigational equipment, offering a glimpse into the challenges of seafaring in a bygone era. Another exhibit delves into the fascinating geology of the Sletterhage area. You can learn about the powerful ice age glaciers that sculpted the Mols Hills, including the very peninsula where Sletterhage Fyr stands. Displayed are characteristic stones from the beach below, each one a silent witness to the earth’s ancient history. Some of these stones can be traced back to prehistoric volcanoes in Norway and Sweden, carried here by the relentless movement of glacial ice. Sletterhage Fyr is more than just a lighthouse. It’s a gateway to the natural wonders of the region. The surrounding hills and coastline offer breathtaking views. From Ellemandsbjerg, a hilltop vantage point reaching 99 meters above sea level, you can survey the panoramic landscape of southern Djursland, the Mols Hills, and the eastern coast of Jutland. On a clear day, you might even glimpse the distant shores of Zealand, home to Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen. The waters around Sletterhage Fyr teem with marine life, including the small porpoise whales that frequently grace the coastal waters. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures frolicking in the waves. Sletterhage Fyr continues to shine brightly, a symbol of maritime heritage and a testament to the enduring power of human ingenuity.
