Hidden amongst the trees by Søndersø Lake, Skovhuset whispers a story of art and nature. Skovhuset wasn’t always an art space. It began as a family summer house, built in 1923. In 1977, a group of local art enthusiasts, with support from the local council, transformed it into a haven for creativity. They envisioned a space where art could intertwine with the natural world, a place where the rustling leaves and the gentle lapping of the lake would become part of the artistic experience. Skovhuset became a dedicated space for indoor and outdoor exhibitions and events until its closure in 2024. Skovhuset held a unique position, nurturing the interaction between art and nature. The institution aimed to raise awareness about the environment and our dependence on it. In 2021, Skovhuset embarked on a new mission. They launched a series of world-class exhibitions, hoping to solidify its place as a creative hub. Their goal was to become a leading voice in contemporary debates on nature, the environment, and climate change. The exhibitions explored the boundaries between the aesthetic, the organic, and the ecological. They delved into the complex relationships between politics, economics, and ethics. One exhibition, “Now, the Forrest Fades,” explored the unnerving aspects of nature and our primal fear of the unknown. It challenged visitors to confront the less pleasant aspects of nature and acknowledge its presence within us. Skovhuset believed that nature, art, culture, and human life are inextricably linked, not opposing forces but parts of the same ecosystem. This holistic view, often reflected in art, became the guiding principle of Skovhuset, shaping its exhibitions and programs until its closure.
