Gazing across Skokie Lagoon #1, can you imagine thousands of men toiling with shovels and picks? This serene oasis, Skokie Lagoon #1, wasn’t always so peaceful. It began as the “Chewab Skokie,” or “Big Wet Prairie,” a vast marsh teeming with wildlife. The Potawatomi thrived here, hunting and fishing amidst the reeds and grasses. European settlers arrived and drained the marsh for farmland, tragically disrupting the natural ecosystem. The once-vibrant marsh became a source of floods and peat fires. In 1933, President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) embarked on a monumental task: transforming the damaged marsh into the Skokie Lagoons. Skokie Lagoon #1, part of this project, became the largest CCC undertaking in the nation. Imagine over 2,000 men, earning a mere $30 a month, most of which they sent home to their families. They lived in a camp nearby, enduring rigorous labor, mostly by hand. They moved four million cubic yards of earth, reshaping the landscape, and planting the trees that grace the lagoon’s edge today. This back-breaking work wasn’t just about creating a recreational area. It was about restoring a damaged ecosystem, providing employment during the Great Depression, and instilling a sense of pride and discipline in the workers. Skokie Lagoon #1 became a testament to their hard work and resilience. Today, we can enjoy the fruits of their labor: a peaceful haven for boating, fishing, and birding, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the tranquility of nature. The legacy of the CCC endures in every ripple of the water and every rustle of leaves, a reminder of how human endeavor can transform a troubled landscape into a place of beauty and renewal.
