Skjørring Kirke

It’s a living story etched in stone and wood. The original structure, built from rough-hewn granite and fieldstones, dates back to the 12th century. A new tower reached towards the heavens in 1867, and a weapons house was added in 1878. A magnificent altarpiece, crafted in the high renaissance style between 1615 and 1620, commands attention. The altarpiece features an 1897 painting by Anker Lund depicting the Last Supper, a poignant reminder of faith and sacrifice. Look closely at the pews. Their 17th-century gables speak of a time when families gathered here for worship. The “herskabsstole,” or lord’s chairs, reserved for the owners of the Sjelle Skovgård estate, are particularly noteworthy. The south side boasts the crests of the Skram and Parsberg families, while the north side displays those of the Kaas and Vind families. Skjørring Kirke also houses a rustic, Romanesque granite baptismal font, part of the “Galten group.” Similar fonts can be found in the nearby churches of Galten, Skovby, and Storring, hinting at a shared history and craftsmanship. The church, located just 3 km north of Galten and 21 km west of Aarhus, remains a vibrant part of the community.
