Five stones whisper tales of Skelgårdskirken’s past. They rest within the church’s eastern wall, to the left of the altar. These aren’t just any stones. They are foundation stones, fragments of history from five other churches: Tårnby Kirke, Filialkirken, Korsvejens Kirke, Kastrup Kirke, and Store Magleby Kirke. Imagine them, silently witnessing the unfolding story of Skelgårdskirken. This modern church, nestled in Kastrup on Amager, near Copenhagen, is a relatively new addition to the landscape. Skelgårdskirken opened its doors in 1989. Its design, a creation of architect Gert Ingemann from the MØllen firm in Helsingør, stands as a testament to contemporary architecture. The first symbolic spade pierced the earth on May 10, 1988, and just over a year later, on July 30, 1989, the church was consecrated. Those five foundation stones, laid on September 16, 1988, aren’t the only hidden treasures. A time capsule rests within the wall, holding blueprints of the church, two 1988 coins donated by Amagerbanken, and a document commemorating the laying of the foundation stones.
