Prehistory is right here. That’s what the Aarhus University Hospital’s website boldly declared. And it’s true. Right here in Skejby. We stand on land settled since the early Iron Age around 500 BC. Archaeological digs have unearthed evidence of even earlier Stone Age settlements. Think about that. Centuries of history lie beneath our feet.

Skejby wasn’t always the bustling suburb it is today. It began as a small village overlooking the broad Egaa Valley. The old village is still visible. It centers around the charming white village church. The area’s rapid growth transformed Skejby. It expanded to include a large business park and an industrial park. A regional hospital and several major educational and business institutions also joined.

The Aarhus University Hospital dominates Skejby’s landscape. Built between 2012 and 2018 it’s a modern marvel. The new hospital complex absorbed other hospital departments across Aarhus. It became fully functional in 2020. It also includes a psychiatric department and the city’s only emergency and trauma center. This is a significant part of Skejby’s modern identity. It’s a testament to the area’s progress and medical prowess.

East of Randersvej a low-rise residential area developed. It includes the Skejby Centret mall. The headquarters of TV 2/Østjylland television company is also there. North of the mall a light industrial park expanded. This contains large stores like IKEA ILVA and Silvan Byggemarked. It also includes mixed industries offices and warehouses. The industrial park stretches towards the neighborhood of Vejlby. Mollerup Skov woodland connects it with the nature area of Egaa Engsø.

In December 2017 Aarhus light rail reached Skejby. The light rail connects the inner city to Skejby. It continues north to Lisbjerg. There is a station conveniently located at the Aarhus University Hospital. This rail connection dramatically altered transportation in Skejby improving its accessibility. The history of Skejby is therefore a fascinating blend of ancient roots and modern development.

From a modest Iron Age settlement Skejby has blossomed. It now houses significant regional institutions. The history of Skejby is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of growth change and the evolution of a community. It’s a story that continues to unfold right before our eyes. Take a moment to appreciate the rich layers of history and modernity found here in Skejby.
