In the heart of Skanderborg, Skanderup Kirke stands as a testament to centuries of history. A church built of stories, whispered from the stones themselves. Skanderup Kirke isn’t just a building. It’s a living timeline, stretching back to the mid-1100s. Imagine the world then, a time of kings and castles, a world vastly different from our own. Skanderup Kirke has witnessed it all. It began as a modest structure, a ship, a choir with an apse, and a western tower. Over time, like a growing tree, it expanded. The nave extended westward, a sturdy tower rose, and a protective vestry was added. Skanderup Kirke even boasts a link to royalty. From the time of Valdemar, it was royal property, overseen by a succession of kings until 1699. Then, its patronage and tithes were sold to Hans Lønberg, the priest of Fruering-Vitved. Throughout the 1700s, it changed hands among various private owners until finally, around 1800, it was sold to the parishioners themselves. This local ownership solidified in 1909 when it became self-governing. Inside, echoes of wealthy patrons resonate. Their epitaphs adorn the walls, testaments to their desire to be remembered. Their gifts, like the 1650 altarpiece from Peder Pedersen Borum and his wife, and the 1653 pulpit from Clemend Clemendsen and his wife, enrich the space. Even the war and land commissioner Hans Folsach, who owned Skanderup Kirke in 1741, left his mark, adding the distinctive spire that graces the tower today. But Skanderup Kirke has also known loss. In 2003, thieves stole precious artifacts. Among them were a 1588 bible, a 1660 chalice, and a 1500s altar disk. Remarkably, these stolen treasures were recovered in 2015, their stories continuing. A closer look reveals the church’s Romanesque origins, seen in the lower part of the tower, the choir, the apse, and the nave. The church also bears the marks of later additions, especially from the late Middle Ages. Then, the church was lengthened, and a brick tower was built and later completed with a characteristic onion-shaped spire in 1741. During a restoration in the 1960s, Romanesque frescoes were uncovered, depicting rare scenes from the apocryphal writings about the Apostles Paul and Peter. These vibrant images offer a glimpse into the beliefs and artistry of a bygone era. Skanderup Kirke stands not in isolation but within the embrace of Skanderborg. It has seen the town grow and flourish around it, a silent witness to the passage of time.
